Resume Writing Tips

Your resume is the first impression you make, so it is important that you make it count. Read the five tips below and be sure your resume makes the right impression:

Make sure that your resume is in the right format for uploading. Our system accepts PDFs, TIFFs and JPEGs.
Clearly state your name and contact details. We cannot contact you without these details.
Personalise your resume to the position you are applying for. This will help you keep your resume short and to the point.
Stick to a legible font and make sure that your text is big enough to read easily.
Check your grammar and spelling thoroughly before uploading your document.

Interview Tips

Before the interview

Make sure that you know where your interview will take place. See the FAQs below to find out where our offices are located.
Prepare questions to ask during the interview about the job. It is important that you interview us about the position and our company to see if you would enjoy the job.
Look over your CV and be prepared to answer questions about your past experience.
Ask if there are any documents that you need to bring to the interview and what you can expect during the interview.

The interview

Our business environment is formal. It is advisable that you dress formally for the interview. Look at the pictures on the Careers site homepage to see what formal dress looks like.
Arrive on time for the interview. First impressions count and being late is a bad way to start your interview.
Calm yourself and relax. The fact that you’ve reached this stage means that we are interested in you, so put your best foot forward.
Speak clearly and take your time in answering questions. There’s nothing wrong with pausing before answering a question or asking the interviewer to repeat the question.
Make sure that you understand what the job entails by the end of the interview.

After the interview

Be patient when awaiting feedback on the interview. Sometimes the interview process can take time to conclude.

What do you look for, other than good grades?

We look for people who share our values – people who are performance driven, individually accountable and independent-minded.

Does Allan Gray recruit graduates?

Yes, Allan Gray recruits graduates. Unlike most companies, we do not run a 'rotational' graduate programme where graduates rotate through various departments in the business. We recruit recent graduates into permanent positions from day one.

Does having a disability affect my application?

No. We have a diverse workplace and we welcome all applications.

I am a foreign national, can I apply?

Yes, however, if successful you will not be able to start until your work visa is approved. The application process for a work visa can be quite long. We would assist you in facilitating this process.

How many interviews will I go through?

You will potentially go through three interviews, depending on the position we feel you are most suited for.

How is my application screened?

Your details will be viewed by Allan Gray recruiters. We guarantee that all applications will be screened thoroughly.

What if I need to relocate?

If you are successful, it is likely that you will be required to relocate to Cape Town. We have a relocation program which covers you if you are relocating from an area which is 60km or more outside of Cape Town.

What training and development do you offer?

All employees get full induction and product training when they join the company. We also provide ongoing training, development and workshops for our employees, through internal leadership programs and external service providers.

Are there international opportunities at your company?

Yes, our sister company, Orbis Investment Management, offers a secondments opportunities that employees can apply for. The application process is stringent, and only employees with a strong track record are offered secondments.

Does Allan Gray assist with further studies?

Yes. We support employees with financial sponsorship for studies that are in line with your current role and / or our industry.

I never received my activation email

Check your spam folders as certain email managers filter emails. Also make sure you have entered your email address correctly.

When I try to register the system tells me my ID number already exists

You may have registered previously, but did not activate your registration via the activation email. Send an email to careers@allangray.co.za and describe the problem. We will help you restart the registration process.

I keep entering the password provided but it doesn’t work, even though I reset it repeatedly

You can only reset your password after you have confirmed your registration via the activation email. If you did not receive this email, send an email to careers@allangray.co.za and describe the problem and we will assist you.

Problems uploading documents

Only the following formats will be accepted: PDF, TIFF and JPEG. File sizes are limited to 2MB and there should be no special characters in the filename.
